Love it or hate it, if you’ve been playing video games, techno music is a part of your life. The bottom line is it’s a go-to genre for video game music since games graduated from the 8-bit era, and went from bleeps and bloops to beats and melodies. Since then we’ve graduated to high production value symphonic and rock soundtracks but at its very core, video game music is electronic first. Tom Holkenberg, otherwise known as Techno artist and bestselling DJ Junkie XL has been a prolific veteran of the video game music scene. His first work in the industry was on the very first Need for Speed in 1995. Since then, he’s done work on over 20 game soundtracks, and has recently released several of them as standalone CD’s with excellent sales on their own. Most recently he’s done work on triple A titles such as Mirror’s Edge, Burnout Paradise and God of War 2.

Now Junkie XL’s video game music isn’t the same as the set he might play for 8 hours at a thumping Ibiza club, but every track is carefully crafted for the games they’re in, much like a movie score is crafted for each particular scene. He is so involved in the video game music industry, that the music label he’s currently signed to, Artwerk, was formed by Electronic Arts.

I could go through specific tracks that are perfect for gaming, but it’s just silly. Cross reference Junkie XL with video game soundtrack in an itunes search, and you can’t possibly go wrong. Even if techno isn’t up your alley, he’s remixed songs by everyone from The Cure to Public Enemy to Justin Timberlake to Elvis Presley to Coldplay to Ramstien. To call him eclectic is an understatement.

Below I’ve included a video of the game Audiosurf featuring Junkie XL’s excellent track Stratosphere. Listen to it from beginning to end, and you’ll be able to hear both his 8-bit video game inspiration at the outset to his undeniable relevancy and groove in contemporary gaming music.
