Modern Warfare 2 Midnight Madness

Haha, Asian nerds.

Ok. So it’s been released. The time has finally come upon us.
I was on my way to the midnight launch at Best Buy last night but thought, hey, let me drive by Gamestop to see what’s going on there. I was going to take a picture of it to do some reporting back, but when I got there I couldn’t find words to describe the madness.
There was at least 200 people outside the doors of this hole in the wall Gamestop. And as I drove by I slowly began fearing for my life. When I noticed several groups with beers in their hands I knew I made the right choice to go to Best Buy.
As I was driving I could only hope that the crowd I’m going to go head first into was not as rowdy as the one I just left. It’s 11:14 p.m. and I’m almost there. Down the road, I see the yellow sign for the store and my heart starts beating faster. I arrive and to my shock there’s only about 40 people there. I get out of the car and notice that on the wall there is a projected image of a 4 split screens playing Modern Warfare 2. They announce that there will be a tournament for a $50 gift card and I was impressed. I didn’t enter because it was too hard for me to see the game clearly, so I wouldn’t have done much.
But looking around I saw several different types of dorks and nerds. Tall, short, fat, skinny, Black, Asian, Hispanic, White, nerds with glasses, and dorks who thought they were cool, but weren’t, jocks, older fathers with their 12 year old brats that are going to be killing everyone online later on, and not to mention a few girls peppered in the crowd that were obviously dragged there because they had that “I can’t believe I’m here, what the hell am I doing??” look on their faces.
The line started forming, 12:00 a.m, and while the very unorganized tournament was still going on, people were being called in. I saw the first 50 people or so come out with a poster, but I knew they didn’t have enough for everyone. I get inside and there is a table set up with every single copy and edition of the game (along with Disney’s Up in a corner) and I go to grab my copy but hear, “sir, if you pre ordered, your copy is waiting for you at customer service.” I thought, “sweet,” until I turned and saw the line, that is when my “sweet” turned to “shit.” She said I can grab up if I pre ordered it, which I did. So I grabbed that and went off to another line.
I’m standing behind a couple of Asians that started making fun of me because I’m buying Up instead of downloading it on Torrents (which the older one proved to me was the “smarter thing to do” since he had Up already on his iPhone.) That is when I began to ignore them, until I heard the older one say playingly to the crowd around us, “does anyone want to buy a modded MW2 Xbox?” As he was laughing with his younger compadre, it’s then that it was cemented that they were beyond the regular annoying nerd. It did not help that there was a group of dorks in front of them that were talking so loud in their “I’m not really cool, but I’m going to ramble on about random things like I know what I’m talking about but I really don’t because I’m an idiot starving for attention” voices. I turned to see all the people that did not pre order picking up their copies from the the desk in front and walking to an empty register, paying, and leaving. I couldn’t, and still can’t make sense of it, but that’s what I get for pre ordering I guess. The line was obviously not moving fast enough. Maybe all the more obvious to me than the Asian nerds and loud dorks who were now joining forces for an all out assault on my eardrums and patience. I saw more than a few people walking out with the Prestige Edition and was picking out the ones I thought looked like they were the type to open it up in the parking lot and start using the NVG’s right there. There was one guy, who turned out to be an employee at the store, who was walking back and forth from the line to the back room, talking and mingling with fellow employees just loud enough to make sure people around were looking at him. Without a doubt, he looked like someone that would be walking into handicap posts in the parking lot wearing Night Vision Goggles.
Well, it’s my turn. Give the receipt, hand over the money and as simple as that I’m an owner of the game that is being called the most anticipated game of this decade. And as I was walking out of the store, low and behold, who is out there with night vision goggles on? Yup, loud best buy employee dork, with Superman license plate on his blue ass car and all. 2 points for me. After seeing that, along with everyone else I noticed walking away with the Prestige Edition, I came to the conclusion that it’s a special kind of nerd/dork that spends the money on that. And I’m just not that qualified. It was an interesting experience and am glad I got it at midnight instead of waking up early to get out there and pick it up. I actually did an unboxing video too which is below. So to recap, don’t preorder from Gamestop unless you’re used to environments like inner city neighborhoods at night, don’t pre order from Best Buy unless you like standing in line with annoying people instead of walking in and walking out within a span of 3 minutes, there are various types of nerds and dorks out there all of which are equally annoying, and NVG’s are the perfect way to sift out people with too much money in their pockets in a crowd of said nerds and dorks.
Oh, and then there’s the losers that gets home and make a video of the unboxing of the game. I did it for you guys and was inspired by Rob, so enjoy. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go and violently murder whatever I have left of a social life.

We really do need to keep the unboxings going. If I ever buy anything again (I’m cheap, remember?) I’ll do another one, too.
Awesome story!

Steam seems to have followed Xbox Live on the ban band wagon. They banned 2500 PC gamers caught cheating on Modern Wrfare 2, and they say this is only the first round. http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/30/so-long-2500-modern-warfare-2-steam-cheaters/
