I don’t really think you can convince non-gamers to become gamers. I mean, you might get granny into Tetris, but that doesn’t mean she’s going to cut out on bingo night.
In order to convince someone to become a gamer in this way, their objection to gaming has to be predicated upon ignorance of the gaming.. as in “Wow, I didn’t know what games were like, but now I do and I like them”. I think most people are more like “Yep, that’s pretty much what I expected, except in HD”
For whatever reason, there are people that just don’t click with interactive media.
If Kingdom Hearts, the Sims, and Rock Band didn’t do it, nothing will.
Battlefield: Bad Company for the friend that likes guns, war movies, etc. because the environments are so absolutely beautiful, sound design is amazing, and weapon feedback is also amazing.
Mass Effect for the sci-fi nerd friends
Forza for car loving friends (i have shown friends forza 2, with wheel, and they fell in love and bought the game)
the first 15minutes of Bioshock for friends who enjoy the noir genre, eerie shit, or a good plot/story.
(definition of NOIR: bleak settings. A very dark low-key light style, using harsh lighting and deep shadows.)
there’s more but for the sake of time, that’s all i’ll throw out there
Trying to sway opinion is too much work. If they don’t already have an interest in games then give them something simple to play with like a ball or crayons. “Windows already has Solitaire you dullard!”
For the interested I would suggest something on a PC because everyone is already familiar with a mouse and keyboard. If they wanted my opinion I’d suggest the Orange Box.
If someone isn’t already into games, it’s probably because
A. They’re dirt poor and can’t afford a system, PC, or games. In which case I’m not going to torture them by showing them all the great stuff they’re missing out on.
or
B. They just don’t care for playing games. In which case I show them games with heavy stories and all the really great cut scenes.
I’ve been trying to get my wife into gaming for awhile now. I started with Peggle, that failed. She got bored with all the innovative PSN games (flower, pixel junk eden, elefunk, ect..) She liked LBP for about 3 days. Finally Lego Batman worked, but now she won’t touch anything other then the Lego games.
Ha I too have tried getting the wife into it and after countless tries the only thing she’ll sit down and play with me besides Scene it are those damn Lego Games.
When it comes to other non gamers, I’d have to agree with the majority. If they’re not into video games by now they are either have a hand to eye coordination complex, or they’re just not into games. They’re probably into “cool” things like cars and sports.
But if I had to pick a game, I’d consider what the person liked. Sports for sports, racing for racing, blah blah. If they were an all around person without hesitation I’d have them play the first chapter of Uncharted 2. Not to stroke the genitals of this game more than I, or everyone else already have, but the first chapter is not too hard and is very intriguing, perfect to lure someone into gaming.
My friend (who has a 360 but only does Rockband) really enjoyed the movie Zombieland when we went to see it. So I let him borrow my copy of Left 4 Dead and put a 3 month Xbox Live Gold card in it with my gamertag written on it. Hopefully he decides to take his box online! He really doesn’t know what he’s missing not hooking up his 360 online.
Still waiting…
Most of the games I have don’t really help to get people into gaming. When they see me playing games like Legend of the Ghost Lion, they tend to shake there heads. But I’ve recently started playing Super Mario RPG, and I think that would be a good game to show people.
Hey guys, i’m back!!!! Anyway, the game i show to non gamers… thats a toughie, I play Burnout Paradise when my dad is in the room, because he races cars he likes it. Likes it is not the right word, but we’ll say he tolerates it, and doesn’t hate video games for a while. My mom really doesn’t care, as long as she sees me playing online, so I have “friends” then i’m fine on halo. I really just show other people what I think they would like. (By the way Exitebots is a great game to give to anybody… Its fun!!!)
The game I currently show to non gamers is buzz quiz TV. It’s simple enough for anyone to play and a lot of fun. Although, Uncharted 2 was getting a lot of praise from non-gaming family members that were staying with us recently.

I decided to come up with 1 game per system as the people I would show games too might have interested in one over the others.
Wii = Wii Sports or Wii sports resort.
PS3 = Little Big Planet
Xbox 360 = any Call of Duty game.

The only game that gave me any success was Burnout 3: Takedown.
I’ve given up all hope as far as my wife is concerned.
