Question Of The Week For October 5th
September 29th, 2009 by Dana

What difficulty mode do you always go to first? Are you a player who likes to go through a game with little trouble, or do you prefer a challenge and rush to play the insane modes? Something in between perhaps?

Depends on the game. With most titles I will start on the default or normal mode, with most shooters I will start on easy.

Most of the time achievements will drive my choices. If that is not a factor I typically start on the normal mode, skip the next hardest, and then go to Vetran… ahem, i mean the most difficult.

i will always choose the hardest difficulty for a hardcore shooter game like halo or call of duty. i beat call of duty 2,3, and 4 on veteran. same with halo. but if i am playing a more story driven game like bioshock or mass effect i’ll tone the difficulty down to enjoy it.
both bioshock and mass effect were games i started out playing on the hardest difficulty but had to drop the level down because i found them both to be too annoyingly fucking difficult to play on the hardest setting and it hindered my enjoyment of the story.

I usually try the second hardest degree of difficulty because the hardest will suck all of the fun out of the game.
With games that have been languishing on my shelf, I tend to play them on easy mode (don’t forget to visit the forums at ezmodeunlocked dot com) so I can finish them as quickly as possible.

I usually start a game on Easy or Normal.
I’m profoundly left handed like Trees. As a result, I stink at shooters.
If I start getting good at a game, I might try to work my way up to the harder levels.

If it’s a Halo title, I jump right into Heroic difficulty. For everything else, I start on normal.

I normal say to myself. “Self, do you really want to be frustrated?” then I answer “No Freakin way!” so I put it in Easy Mode.

I generally leave the game on whatever the default setting is. If it asks, I’ll almost always pick whatever the middle one is (why can’t they just call it Easy, Normal, Hard.. whys it got to be casual heroic legandary?)
Anyways, the only exception is Japanese games. Those Japanese guys is hardcore, and a lot of times even their easy modes are way too hard.. see the Star Ocean series, or any Street Fighter game.

Depends on the what type of game it is.
For shooters I like to pump up the difficulty, for RPGs like Mass Effect or Oblivion I like to turn down the combat difficulty in order to enjoy the story or environment more.
For Platformers or other types that I don’t play often I start at the default and adjust it to my liking.

If I hear it’s a short game I’ll play it on normal difficulty. But if the game is longer I’ll go with easy so I won’t run into any problems along the way and I’ll be able to beat it quicker in order to get into the next game. Time is money especially when your Gamefly membership is running out.
No matter the length though, if it’s a AAA title and I want to enjoy it the way it was meant to be enjoyed I go with normal. Call me a pansy but I never touch anything above that.

Most of my games are rentals, so I usually just start on easy, so I can finish the story. If I buy a game, then I’ll start on the default level and work my way up.

Well if I’m playing a FPS I always go for the hardest difficulty I like a good challenge; but if I’m playing anything else like Mirrors Edge or GTA I will go for the Normal settings for I can enjoy the story at a more comfortable level.

I’m pretty boring. I usually just pick the game up and play with whatever the difficulty is set to. If the game makes me choose, I hit continue on whatever is pre-selected for me.
After that, if the game is too hard or easy, I’ll adjust it.
Sometimes I crank a game up to super death mode to challenge myself for a couple levels but I’m too casual to play sweating, on the edge of my seat through an entire game.

I’m not one to revel in wrestling with hard games; when I play, I want to relax. For most things normal is fine for that, but for games with shooter elements like Uncharted, I still resorting to easy.

Like everyone else, it depends on the game and whether or not I own it. It also depends if I’m unemployed or not. My unemployed ass would typically start on a harder difficulty (especially if achievements were involved). Now that I’m gainfully employed I start on normal then step it up if I feel like I’m just grinding through gameplay.

Most of the games I play don’t even HAVE difficulty settings. It’s not usually a big deal but certain games, like The Immortal or Xexyz, could have really benefited from an easy option of some kind.

I like to play medium or whatever its called in the game. If I enjoy the game then I try the harder difficulty. Get well Yummy Flaquito!
