Question Of The Week For August 17th

August 11th, 2009 by Dana

Are you the type of gamer who wants to play every game the day it comes out, or are you content catching up on older games or even playing games you might have missed in older generations of consoles?

It’s not very often that I play a game right when it first comes out. A good game is still going to be good no matter when you play it right? The games that I try to get into on day one are the ones I want to get involved with online. It’s best to get into the online community at the beginning b/c you never know when it’ll start to taper off or when your friends will move on to other games.

PS. I still have a copy of Crackdown that I haven’t gotten around to playing yet. hehe

I rarely buy my games new or upon their immediate release. I am quite content to wait for new releases to show up on the used shelves because I am cheap and because I couldn’t care less about the online component. So, while I wait, I am more than happy to play games that have been out for a while or to replay games that I already own.

In the past I had to get the hot new game on release day but I did not always play them right away. Then as the economy has gone down hill I have purchased less and less release day games and I wait for a bargain. It is the sick collector in me that wanted it NOW but that has switching wanting it CHEAP!

I’m with Clyde on this one. I used to want to buy games on release day. But the last game I purchased like that has still not been opened (GOW2). Mostly because I wanted to finish GOW1 first (which still hasn’t happened because when I went back to play I had to start over from the beginning). Anyway, so my answer is I want to play every game when it comes out, but I have resigned myself to playing my back catalog of games. Of course I will make a COD:MW2 and forza 3 exception to this.

I would love to play every game when it comes out but I have to be realistic there is so much content out there that I still haven’t finished. Halo Wars, Dead Space and I know there is some other games out there that I can’t remember right now, but I know I will be buying MW 2 and Halo 3: ODST.

I’m a sucker for these two franchises, I already requested days off work to play both of these games.

i usually only play games on the current consoles, except for a few of the major hits like halo. when i was younger and had money to blow id buy every new game. i had 20 or 30 original xbox games. but now that im a poor college student i rent games or wait a few months for the prices to go down before i buy new or even used. the exception is multiplayer games i know i will play for a long time like COD4 or the new modern warfare 2.

You guys probably know my answer for this one. While my interest in this generation of games comes and goes, I’m always up for some Bayou Billy or Spanky’s Quest.

  8. Oatmeal25 Says:

I’ll buy a game on day one if it’s Half Life or comes with useful free stuff. For example Gears 2 came with the flashback map pack and a headshot doll that I ended up giving away to one of my fruity ez-mode friends.

Has anyone mentioned the shame that accompanies a day one lineup?

The midnight launch for Gears 2 had to be one of the most awkward experiences of my life. About a 100 guys standing around with a false swagger thinking they were the shit. They weren’t the shit, they stunk like Duritos and Diet Coke and needed an intense anti-bacterial scrub of their dominant hand.

I felt like a complete tool just being there.

“You do that, you go to the box, you know. Two minutes, by yourself, you know and you feel shame, you know. And then you get free. ”

Depends on the game. Some games I can wait for, some games I buy the first day.

There are games for me that I have to get. Either I’m a big fan and know that I’ll go back to it and enjoy it, ghostbusters and the batman game coming out to give a few examples, or it’s something I’ve been waiting for a long time for and it gets good reviews (oh, how many games I couldn’t wait for and they turn out sucking). Other than that I’m fine waiting. I have games that I’m surprised I haven’t played yet and games that I wanted day one but couldn’t get and then rented later on to find out I didn’t like it at all (Killzone 2, I just couldn’t get in to it).

And as it were, there are some times throughout the year where if a game came out, and you didn’t buy it that week or rent it at least, you are going to go a few months without playing it due to other games coming out. It happened to almost every game that I haven’t played yet but wanted to get day one… Weird.

If I am keeping an eye on a game where the online component is what excites me, I will want to pick it up while the online play is hot.
If the game is more of a single player experience, I will likely hold off untill the price goes down.

  12. Gadget Man 007 Says:

I’d love to play every game the day it comes out but unfortunately time and money don’t allow that. For me, I purchase games that I know I’ll love and will have a strong multiplayer community among my friends for awhile. Anything else, I’ll either try to rent on day one, or purchase later on the cheap.

  13. Fatboy01 Says:

I buy most games that I want to play on day 1. Because I tend to blow through single player games pretty fast I usually am done with a game after about 2-4 weeks, and then only if its a good game. I then trade those games in to cut the cost of whatever the next game I am buying is.

games that I plan on playing online are an absolute must on day 1. I know that its only a matter of time before the community moves on to a diffrent game, unless its something like a Halo or CoD.

Also while I dont need to play a game on day one the longer a game is out the less new it feels to me. after a few weeks if no one I know has played and recommended it to I usually stop caring and start anticipating the next big thing.

  14. sha-near Says:

Short answer; Not anymore, but kinda still yeah.

There are two reasons I’m not much of a day one purchaser anymore. First; Goozex. If all I have to do is wait for a game as opposed to paying for it, I’m down with that. Second; my recent realization that I don’t enjoy online play all that much. Other players could be bots for all I care, at least bots don’t point out that I suck.

With those two factors in play, the only reasons I have left to be a day one purchaser is to have that shiny new toy and the premium price tag that comes along with it.

Downloadable games are another story. The games are just right there, and you know they are not going to get cheaper anytime soon. I go for that damn bait too often. Worst part about that is I have to constantly see those games sitting on my hard drive not being played. More then half these games I’ve downloaded give me that icky buyers remorse feeling. I’m sure I’ll fall prey to the PSN store again… soon.

Having said all that. L4D2 is going to be a day one purchase for me. I know, I know, I said I hate online play. Well this game gets it just right for my antisocial tendencies. I don’t have to talk, the characters do that for me.

  15. Redlow Says:

So long as I’m not peeing my pants in excitement for a new release, I can usually wait a while before I pick up a game I’m interested in. But I’ve never had more than one console at a time, so if a game is so old that it’s for a prior system, I doubt I’d get it.
